Hailing from both France & Sweden this was the first home our clients purchased together, since making the UK home for them and their two young children. The Grade II listed Georgian house has seven bedrooms & five bathrooms, arranged over two floors, all set in an impressive private plot close to the village green. Originally built in 1750, this former B&B had sadly been stripped of most of its original features, following extensive renovations by previous owners.
We were appointed by the clients to restore the house to its former glory, while also sympathetically updating it to suit their needs. The result is a statement home that celebrates the grand spaces of the Georgian property whilst keeping the design calm and refined, keeping an intimate feeling within the grand proportions of the rooms. Our clients also wanted us to reflect their heritage in the design and requested a mix of Parisianluxe with a Scandinavian design twist. Sustainability was a really important consideration for our clients. As well as installing ground source heating and where possible we sourced antique architectural fittings and furniture to reduce the impact of the project.
Being listed we were slightly restricted in what we were allowed to do in terms of layout. While we didn’t extend the property, we did rework the primary suite layout to improve the flow through the dressing room and to create a walk-in shower & private W/C in the ensuite. As well as installing a full plasterworks package including raised & fielded panels and a bespoke decorative ceiling, we also designed an extensive joinery package including dressing rooms, a new kitchen, boot & utility rooms, and bookshelves in the main study as well as display shelves with low-level storage in the main dining room. But the biggest change we made was commissioning a cantilever limestone staircase & limestone tiles with NeroMarquina Cabochon inserts in the entrance hall.
As well as leading the interior architecture of this project we were also responsible for the substantial FF&E package. Our clients tasked us with balancing a clean and elegant aesthetic with the demands of modern family life. With two kids and two dogs, we had to make sure that the design was not only beautiful but robust. To achieve this we curated a palette of beautiful materials, including luxe marble and alabaster, softened with layers of sumptuous velvets, boucle textures, and brushed cottons.
