The client fell in love with the house's location but wanted to drastically update the aesthetic. The existing heavy joinery and dark timber detailing sucked the life out of this townhouse, but like her, we could see its great potential. We set about completely reimagining this townhouse, bringing a hint of California cool to this corner of Belgravia. Our client's brief was to create a warm sanctuary inspired by her travels around the Mediterranean.
Built in the 1980s the house had some existing unsympathetic cornicing and panelled doors. We removed these and instead leaned into the modern age of the house and set about adding cleaner architectural detailing. To soften the lateral spaces we rounded all the harsh corners in the house. Introducing a bespoke wide plank oak timber floor added much-needed warmth, paired with soft stroke Bauwerk walls to accentuate all the newly created curves. Frameless doorways and seamless transitions between rooms also helped to increase the sense of space and flow throughout.
The pièce de résistance of the project is the bespoke Travertine bath that we had fabricated for the primary ensuite. Carved from a solid block of Travertine Navona, and weighing over 800kg, the bath was craned into the fourth floor via the terrace to reach its final position. Centered under the window the ellipsed shape is hugged by the perfectly curved corners of the Tadelakt walls.
